An American psychiatrist says … … Contrary to New Age theory, gratitude is not always the quickest response to crap Life throwing at you.
As light, as it may sound, receiving a gift in pain, is not the first thing you do when you are in pain. Our suffering does NOT need to be denied or avoided or overflowing with gratitude. It wants to heal. Are you really thankful for your release? That you missed your flight, were despised, ignored, humiliated, had your cell phone stolen, had cancer, lost your love? It is true that everything happens for a reason, but that is only part of the truth.
If all is NOT GOOD in your universe, do not make the pain worse with gratitude theory; be sad, angry, as well as weak. Avoid karmic definitions, “all is well” bullshit. You may need to be there for just a few seconds. And then … after you’ve mastered the pain as well as drawn lessons it comes thanks. In a heartbeat. About how much you have learned, how the mystery leads you to a higher state of existence, how far you have come, how much you should be grateful for it.
