My, what a delightful coincidence this is. After reading about Tata combining Air-India and Vistara to become India’s largest international carrier and second largest domestic carrier in terms of market share and aircraft fleet, I saw this black-and-white print advertisement on Facebook. I don’t know where it made its first appearance. Back in the days when dinosaurs roamed the earth, this was for Maharaja’s airline. Well, the 1970s at least. There is no doubt that the maharaja is much older. He’s been bowing for Air India since 1946. Hercule Poirot’s mustache pointing and eyes respectfully closed. He wore red socks and black mojadis at his toes while wearing a red and gold turban and tunic.
The sales pitch is unbelievable. Air India was offering return flights daily on its 747 Jumbos Jets to New York for just Rs. 4,004! Compared to the single fare then, this was less. In its excursion fare flight plan, Bombay was the top city since the airline is headquartered here. Also Delhi, Calcutta, and Madras. These cities encounter frequent fliers who are from ultra-rich families with old money that was inherited. Many generations of people who acquired their wealth independently from independent enterprises came from elsewhere later in history. On the New York return fare, the Maharaja waived the additional travel tax if you paid in foreign exchange! The good old days were filled with kindness and courtesy.
