Death. If it were possible, I would knock off May 30 on my calendar right now. On that fateful day, my only sibling, Trevor, was taken from me four agonizing years ago. He died of cancer in my arms. And I’m still not over it.
When I drive by the hospital where Dad passed away, my heart always aches a little. A pull. Like he really is inside. Waiting for me to take him home. It aches, still. And now I must patiently await the passing of this day
of grief.
When someone close to you dies, it can be especially difficult to express your feelings to those still living. I find it hard to believe that the deceased are truly gone if they live on in the memories of their loved ones. My mind often returns to him.
I find myself almost reaching for the phone to call him and discuss the game and players whenever a tense cricket (like last night’s IPL final) or football match is on TV. Even now, I long for him. However, he is not the focus here. This is about both of us.
Life is frail and fleeting. Treasure every second of your life and every person who shares it with you and stop taking things for granted. You will miss them and long to see and be with them after they are gone. I just found out that R.I.P. means Rest in Peace and not “Return If Possible.”
The smile on my face is a mask that hides the pain behind it. And now, of all days, I wish I could find him, wherever he may be, and give him a final embrace.
