I dislike Japanese food, as I am unable to tolerate raw seafood and meat smells or tastes. If I visit Tokyo, I will lunch at the Restaurant of Mistaken Orders. If my 90-year-old mother with dementia can travel, I will do so. All waitresses at this unique restaurant are elderly Japanese (some in their 90s) with dementia. Due to cognitive impairment, they often misinterpret requests and deliver erroneous meals. A comforting quality is that diners don’t mind. They enjoy it anyhow.
According to Shiro Oguni, who founded the Restaurant of Mistaken Orders in 2017, 37% of orders are incorrect, yet 99% of customers are satisfied. Japanese food and culture have a high probability of being wonderful. On the menu’s introductory page, the restaurant advises guests in English that it may seem insane. A restaurant that even struggles with order accuracy. However, all of our servers are individuals with dementia. They might get your order right.”
I follow the Restaurant of Mistaken Orders online, which aims to raise dementia awareness and promote a more tolerant society. I like seeing videos of an elderly waitress leading visitors to a table and sitting with them. A straw is used to serve hot coffee. Everyone at the table helps spin a huge pepper mill, resulting in yells of “We did it!” and laughing. While an old waitress brings Gyoza instead of steak.
Oguni says: ‘So it’s a mistake – oh fine!’ This level of tolerance creates a pleasant and enjoyable dining experience.
The negative perception of dementia is replaced with a pleasant, joyful image. This eatery never stops laughing. When tourists witness personnel with dementia smiling and motivated, some feel bravery, while others are brought to tears. Even if it’s not Japanese,
It represents the realities of a super-aging Asian civilization in the 21st century when one in five will have dementia by 2025.
My personal experience with my mother teaches me that dementia is not a person’s identity, but rather a part of them. People are people. The reform must come from society, not them. I am pleased that the Restaurant of Mistaken Orders received the Cannes Lion, a prestigious creative award. The initiative’s beneficial impact and soft message promoting human kindness have garnered recognition in Japan and outside. I would most definitely dine here. I would grin at the aging waitress even if she made a mistake in my order.
