The monsoon rains have been pouring down in Mumbai for weeks, but there’s one umbrella I’m not going to use. I’ve had it for over 20 years, but I’ve never taken it out in public. It’s a small, folding model designed by my friend Aziz Currim of Ebrahim Currim & Sons, the makers of the popular Stag Umbrellas. The canopy is made from pages of a city newspaper I used to edit, and one of the fabric panels features a picture of me from a weekly column I wrote in the early 2000s.
I’m too embarrassed to use the umbrella in public. I’m notorious for losing umbrellas, and I would hate to lose this one. It’s a keepsake, and I don’t want to see it end up in someone else’s hands.
The umbrella is also a bit of a novelty. It’s easy to forget that you’re carrying it, especially if it’s a sunny day. I once made the mistake of buying an umbrella and then leaving it behind in the store. I’ve also walked out of restaurants into the rain, gratefully accepting an umbrella from a confused doorman. And once, I accidentally switched my old, shabby umbrella with a brand new one at a multiplex.
I’m not a bad person. I just have a bad habit of losing umbrellas. But I’m determined to keep this one. It’s a reminder of a time when I was younger and more carefree. And it’s a reminder that even though I’m prone to making mistakes, I’m still capable of cherishing something special.
