For many years, in the afternoons, I saw an old man who looked wise and sad walking down the
the street next to my building while pushing a pushcart ice cream dispenser and selling Kulfi without announcing his arrival with a sales call. He did not ring the bell. The sign on his ambitious cart read, “A1 Dil Bahar Special Kulfi,” with incredible generosity. This meant that the kulfi was extraordinary, delicious, and of exceptional quality. I didn’t have the guts to check whether this was accurate. Additionally, I always preferred to purchase Kulfi from the Punjab Sind Dairy nearby whenever I felt like having it. Delicious and creamy. But I couldn’t help but think about the old man often. He made the Kulfi himself, right?
Using a carefully held age-old family recipe? It could not possibly be simple. However, the company seemed to be chugging along like its sluggish owner. Despite my suspicions that his sales were weak. I never observed any customers embracing the elderly hawker’s lofty claim regarding the caliber and class of his Kulfi. I believe this is the reason he always appeared dejected. He and I haven’t spoken in a while. And I’m hoping he’s still around. Selling his hand-churned delicious kulfi which I hope was genuinely
good. Pushing a noisy cart was a familiar, hunched person.
