When I was a boy, my favourite comic book superhero was the Phantom. He wasn’t part of Marvel Comics or DC Universe. The Phantom fought independently, with his faithful mountain wolf Devil by his side. Hero, the Phantom’s trusty white stallion, accompanied him on his adventures in the Deep Woods of Denkali, where he lived in an ancient Skull Cave with the deadly pygmies of the Bandar tribe. Hero was a fearless and loyal steed, and he played a vital role in many of the Phantom’s daring missions.
The Phantom, the Ghost Who Walks, was a mysterious masked vigilante who used his superhuman strength and cunning to protect the innocent and fight against evil. Though he had no superpowers, his reputation for immortality and his mastery of jungle warfare made him a formidable opponent for any villain. But there were times when the Phantom left the jungle and walked the town like an ordinary man. Those occasions his skin tight purple superhero outfit and guns were hidden beneath a trench coat, hat and dark glasses. What never changed was the indelible skull mark that his magic ring left when he landed a bone-crushing punch on a baddie.
I thought the Phantom was forgotten when his creator, Lee Falk, died in 1999. To my surprise and delight, Amazon informed me this morning that classic Phantom comics of the 1960s are making a comeback after 24 years! These long-out-of-print gems will be released in two hardcover volumes this month, giving fans a chance to relive the adventures of the Ghost Who Walks in all their glory. Both have eight stories each.
The grand-daddy of costumed heroes is back! Amazon is proudly releasing two hardcover volumes of classic Phantom comics from the 1960s, digitally remastered in glorious colour to look better than the originals. Volume 1, with 240 pages, will be out tomorrow for Rs. 4,754, followed by Volume 2, with 256 pages, on September 19. This is a must-have for any fan of the Ghost Who Walks! These are limited editions. Only 1,000 copies of each volume have been printed.
I wonder if I should order them. Have I outgrown the Phantom, the nemesis of pirates, dacoits, hijackers, gangsters, political despots, outlaws, bank robbers, kidnappers and cannibals? Or will his adventures continue to enthral me? And will owning a Phantom comic again reignite the spark of childhood wonder in my heart? Will I feel the same sense of pride and excitement that I did when I first held a Phantom comic in my hands all those years ago?
