Do you remember the Easy Chair? It was a compulsory part of home furniture in middle-class families till the 1970s. I recall it being a large and low reclining chair made of a collapsible wooden frame through which was threaded a piece of canvas that
made up both, the seat and backrest. It was extremely comfortable and relaxing. It could be adjusted to two levels. One for sitting up and reading. The other is for lying back and sleeping.
When not in use, because it occupied a lot of space, the Easy Chair was folded and put away behind the Godrej Cupboard. Children loved the Easy Chair. And used it as a slide when the elders were not looking. I don’t know when it went out of vogue. And what
people did with their Easy Chairs.
Sunday afternoons, the Easy Chair was exclusively reserved by my Father. Monday to Saturday he was doing a 9-to-5. This was the only day he got to catch an afternoon nap. I remember the drill. After lunch, he would light a cigarette and let himself down
on the Easy Chair with a groan. It used to be placed below the whirring ceiling fan. He would switch on the radio. First, the News, read by Melville de Mellow or Pamela Singh. Followed by Ameen Sayani’s Bournvita Quiz Contest. And finally, Cricket with Vijay
Merchant. His cigarette would die down. And he would gratefully nod off to sleep. I think the Easy Chair recharged his batteries. He would wake up, fresh as a daisy, in time for tea. And ready to face whatever the next week brought.
