I received my half-yearly supply of Carbolic bath soap yesterday. Six brilliant red wrapper bars. Each one lasts me a month. One of them is already in use. Carbolic is what I use since it looks, smells, and feels like good old Lifebuoy. Remember the basic red and yellow packaging of Lifebuoy from Hindustan Levers? It was accessible until the 1990s. A large bar of carbolic with the antiseptic odour of all hospitals. After a bath, you felt tingly fresh, clean, and disinfected. It had a catchy radio commercial, “Lifebuoy hai jahan tandoorusti hai waha!” Lifebuoy was a sports-themed soap for men. Just like Pears, which is meant to be used by women. My father, like his father and grandpa before him, utilized it. I continued the custom. Till Hindustan Lever decided to make Lifebuoy seem more upscale than the world’s best health soap. It did away with the traditional octagonal carbolic bar and introduced a curving new Lifebuoy Complete in a beautiful packaging that claimed 100% improved germ protection and smelled of mint and lime and herbs and God knows what else.
I abruptly stopped using Lifebuoy.
Lux was always available if I needed scented soap. And I eventually forgot about Lifebuoy, with its carbolic odour and washing properties.
Then I found Karnataka Soaps & Detergents, which manufactures the famed Mysore Sandalwood bath soap, had a Carbolic bar for just Rs.30 that was Lifebuoy in a new guise. It’s paisa vasool, and it leaves me feeling clean and cleansed, as well as nostalgically smelling like my industrious father after a Lifebuoy bath.
