Not once, but twice yesterday I felt the hot, putrid breath of the Online Scamster on the back of my neck. And both times, I am proud to say, I didn’t fall victim to their fraudulent operations. But I know others who have. Who were cheated out of money. And whose bank accounts were hacked. Their narrations of woe after these deceptions were reported in the newspapers. There’s almost always a news item like this every day in the press. Unsuspecting victims of these scams end up losing a lifetime of savings. They are usually frightened senior citizens unwise in the wicked ways of the modern world. I wonder how far the harried Cybercrime Police get in their investigations. Because the Online Scamsters live to con another day posing as fake representatives of the electricity companies and banks.
I got two alarming SMSes. One telling me my electricity would be cut at night because my last power bill was unpaid. And the other asking for my PAN Card and bank details because I was about to lose my Netbanking facility. I checked both the numbers that these messages came from on Truecaller. Neither was from Adani Power or HDFC Bank. The Online Scamsters were sitting in Bihar. Waiting for me to play ball. But I didn’t. I told them to go right ahead and cut my electricity and Netbanking service. Nothing happened, of course. Maybe Adani Power and HDFC Bank ought to join the Cybercrime cops in taking action. I am giving both the numbers of the Online Scamsters. For Adani it was 9431708396 and 9341774607. And for HDFC it was 8580202680.
