A New York City story of a bus ride during rush hour has been shared on Facebook. As it was snowing in the city, the traffic was slow.
The passengers were exhausted and freezing. Deeply annoyed with others and the world. Two men fought about an intentional or unintentional push. No one provided a seat to a pregnant woman who came aboard. There was no compassion in the air, only rage. But, the driver understood the passengers’ frustration and rough day.
He used the intercom and said “Folks, while I cannot control weather or traffic, I can take action. When you get off, I’ll extend my hand. Drop your concerns into my palm as you pass by. Leave your worries with me tonight, rather than taking them home to your family. My path crosses the Hudson River. I will open the window and dump your worries into the water.”
It was like a spell lifted. The whole group laughed.
Surprised happiness lit up faces. Suddenly, everybody was smiling at each other. As promised, the driver waited at each stop by reaching out his hand. All commuters exited and pretended to drop something into his palm. Some laughed, while others cried, but everyone participated.
The driver continued the exquisite routine to the river.
We all have awful days. Which we strive and fail. Lost employment, money, friends, religion, and love. Fear and withdrawal ensue.
And everything is black. We want light but are unsure where to find it. What if we are the necessary light in a gloomy situation? Like this bus driver. He was no spiritual leader. He was not a media-savvy influencer. He was one of society’s most forgotten employees. Although he had actual power, he utilized it well. Ask yourself, How can you be the light now?
