I am not a habitual churchgoer. , At 5 o’clock in the evening, I will be at the iconic St. Andrew’s Church in Bandra. I was graciously invited by my Facebook friend Wendel Daniels to attend the Mumbai musicians’ Thanksgiving Mass in celebration of their gifts and talents of music. It is the Feast of St. Cecilia tomorrow. The Thanksgiving Mass is held every year on November 22 in honor of her, the patron saint of musicians.
The most fascinating part of this Mass is that musicians of all faiths play along with the choir and organ while sitting in the pews of the church. The Mumbai Musicians Thanksgiving Mass has been held at various churches since 2011. Among the founding members of this group was my dear and departed friend Felix Flor, who was known as India’s Julio Iglesias. Indefatigably, the musicians held the Mass online during Covid.
It is my understanding that the Thanksgiving Mass has grown in popularity over the years, and the churches where it is held have been filled to capacity. The ages of the musicians range from 7 to 70. Tomorrow, more than 25 violinists, five trumpeters, a trombone player, two saxophonists, several guitarists, and a keyboard player will participate. One person is bringing a mandolin. A stage is set up after the Mass for the musicians to entertain. Playing your music is the best way to thank God for it.
