The 6th of July was Sylvester Stallone’s 77th birthday. And if you think aging will slow down the Hollywood great and superstar of the ‘Rocky’ and ‘Rambo’ film franchises, think again.
Since the mid-1970s, Stallone has been an inspiration to generations. He famously observed, “Just because people get older doesn’t mean they abandon their dream or their ability to want to do something.” The heart is the last organ to age.” That is correct. The fourth installment of Sylvester Stallone’s ‘Expendables film series will be released in September. If you haven’t seen ‘Expendables 1, 2, and 3’, he commands a close-knit crew of talented war vets turned mercenaries who serve as the world’s final line of defense when all other choices have been exhausted. I find him quite motivating. And some of the things he said that aren’t moving dialogues from his films but got me thinking are…
1. I’m rather spiritual; I have a strong faith in the human spirit. Nothing is true until you believe in yourself. I also think that once in your life, for one mortal moment, you must strive for immortality; else, you haven’t lived. Everyone is capable of far more than they previously imagined. We can’t all be the team’s stars, but we can all be stars in our own lives. That is where you will establish your aim. Life will use you before you will utilize it. Do that whenever you’re afraid of anything. Don’t do it unless you’re terrified of it.
When you’re afraid, clinging on, and life is hurting you, you’ll find out what you’re truly made of. Any accomplishment in life is achieved by approaching a situation with blind, angry optimism. It has nothing to do with bulk and strength. Your mind is your most powerful muscle. Big words can move mountains, but big arms can only move pebbles.
2. I believe there is an inner power that determines who wins and who loses. And the ones who truly listen to their emotions are the ones that triumph. People have counted me out every time I’ve failed, but I’ve always come back. I succeed because I keep going despite my lack of income, intelligence, or ability. Rejection wakes me up like a bugle. Continuing when you don’t think you can change your life.
Some mornings I want to do nothing. Just relaxing. That is extremely accurate. And anyone who claims otherwise is lying. It’s just human nature. But then you turn over, feel angry with yourself, and realize that in order to get anywhere, you have to make a deposit in the goal bank. So I recall my favorite mantra and repeat it – Keep pounding!
