As soon as final exams are over in most schools and summer breaks, all children are excited for the most awaited month of the year. May, it’s officially declared as summer vacation from ages. I wish I was a boy again, enjoying the summer break. With no worry about lessons, homework, and exams was out of view and out of mind. And the
freedom to not think of studies until June just gave us so much joy. All the fun and action were to happen outdoors. The open grounds witnessed some fierce competition in Cricket and Football. The hockey sticks turned into swords. The boys and girls indulged in all their favorite activities. Boys were seen flying kites, making paper boats, and floating them in the rain, the girls skipped and joyfully rode bicycles and played together innocent games like Hopscotch and Hide n Seek. Everybody watched at least one new Hindi movie during the holiday. There was no limit to how much we could explore outdoors, make new friends, and make beautiful and unforgettable memories,
grow up carefree, with no worries and no anxiety. If the outdoors gave us happiness. We played chess, Ludo, cards, and carom. We read Phantom comics. A few more common books were Flash Gordon, Mandrake the Magician, and The Archie. Radio was a common electronic gadget in every family. It added to the indoor entertainment. Those days other common brands which most of the families had were Crompton fans and Alwyn refrigerators. These were luxuries during our time.
Our day came to an end when the street lights were put out and our mothers called out to us to return home. It was family time in the night. After a fresh bath with Lifebuoy soap, having a hot meal cooked by our mother, eating summer fruit, Alphonso mango, and having Malai kulfi as dessert was a treat. Our night ended with a prayer and a
bedtime story when the lights were switched off at 9.30 pm everyday religiously. Few children went to their native place during summer vacations, because staying home to celebrate Diwali and Christmas was mandatory. As these months passed by and we neared January, it was time to study and prepare for exams and as exams ended and
summer vacations started, the days passed waiting for the results which were brought by the postman who dropped them like bombs at home. And then finally, fatigued by all the fun of playing in April and May, we eagerly waited to get back to school. We looked forward to going to a new class, wearing fresh new uniforms. Make new friends with whom we could share all the holiday experiences, to find new enemies to pick a fight with. As school started, a whole lot of new and fresh things awaited us. New raincoats and gumboots from Duckback brand. The clean printed texted books and exercise books, on which we did not want to write. And a promise to ourselves to be good
students and to do better than the previous year when we played to the fullest, enjoyed every second of the day and made countless memories. And a wish to become a schoolboy and relive the carefree life of a child.
