For every heartbreaking news article I read about people running over dogs and beating pups to death, or strangling cats and drowning kittens, I hear one heartwarming tale of people being kind to strays that touches me greatly. Like this one of Sultan, the gorgeous tom cat. He has no pedigree, despite his regal bearing and noble name.
Sultan is an outcast. As his address, he carefully picked an upper-crust South Mumbai gated Parsi neighborhood at the foot of Malabar Hill. Where, thankfully, a friend and several residents are animal lovers.
Sultan was scheduled to have surgery tomorrow. Gingivitis had struck the unfortunate kitty. An infection of the gums. It was to take many hours for the vet and a dental professional to pull eight of his diseased teeth.
I’ve heard that cats have nine lives. I only recently discovered that they had 30 teeth. Sultan will be able to live a rather good life even without eight of his children.
In addition to sore gums and infected teeth, he had a mouth ulcer. A big operation was to be performed at a Walkeshwar clinic. The price tag was in the five digits.
Sultan emerged one day and quickly won the hearts of the locals. He had a wiry build and a sinister appearance. With haughty green eyes, a black-and-white face, and a goatee.
When other cats intruded on his domain, he fought back viciously. And when the peacocks from Doongerwadi came to visit, he pursued them warily. He amused himself around the colony at all hours of the day and night.
He visited my friend’s place for meals and cat naps. She gave him branded cat chow that tasted like tuna, salmon, and chicken and was high in minerals and vitamins. But, Sultan became unwell, after having the time of his life. My friend had no idea what was wrong. He became depressed.
Looked sick. And sad. Went crazy trying to eat with all the problems in his mouth. He lost weight. She took Sultan to a vet. In an Uber. The problem was diagnosed. The surgery was fixed. Family and neighbors had generously volunteered to share the cost. Everyone adored Sultan.
I agreed to help as well. However, my pal refused the offer. She wanted me to pray for Sultan instead. And that’s what I planned to do that night.
