All the world loves a lover. I am no different. I even am a sucker for those good old-fashioned love stories told on screen. Bollywood and Hollywood. Bollywood does them better because we are an excitable people and Hindi is the more articulate and
passionate language when it comes to profoundly expressing love. So, I am impatiently looking forward to Karan Johar’s big love story and family drama ‘Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahani’ coming next month on the 28th. The teaser is just out. I saw it yesterday
at the Dharma Productions office in a special screening. And I thought, truly, nobody gives romance the kind of cinematic heartbeat that KJo does. Though I wonder, 25 years after his first directorial (‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’ in 1998), how is he able to still
tug at our heartstrings with a soul-searching story on love when Bollywood has exhausted its softer emotions and is now experimenting with mythology, horror, sci-fi, religion, war, history, adventure, disaster, fantasy, dark comedy and biographical. He took his time doing it. His last romance was ‘Ae Dil Hai Mushkil’ in 2016. Seven years. And he’s put out an eclectic cast in ‘Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahani’ with the dishy Ranveer Singh and gorgeous Alia Bhatt bringing all the sizzle and chemistry that you missed in their earlier pairing in ‘Gully Boy’ of 2019, with veterans Dharmendra, Jaya Bachchan, and Shabana Azmi bringing gravitas to the family drama behind what looks to be like a passionate but challenged love story. The 1 minute 20 seconds teaser of the film is just that – a titbit and a promise that teases our senses with opulent sets, exotic locations that take you to the other side of the world, stunning costumes, a rollercoaster
ride of emotions, beautiful people, and the highpoint of all Dharma Productions films – their soulful music and scintillatingly choreographed songs and dances. All this without one word being uttered in the teaser. Watch it and see for yourself.
