Certain memories are worth going back to. Just like if you’d met Muhammad Ali. Conducting an interview with him. Having a friendly fight with him. , and doing so as one of only a few Indians. Despite the fact that it actually took place 33 years ago on Christmas Day in the lobby of the Holiday Inn in Bombay and not in a boxing ring. Today, on the seventh anniversary of his passing, I am reminded of this.
There has never been a better heavyweight boxer than him, and he remains the best ever. It wasn’t always the case, though. He was simply known as Cassius Clay. When in America, Black lives didn’t matter. It was 1960.
He brought the Olympic gold medal back from Rome and was riding high. But a restaurant refused to serve him because of his race. And then a group of motorcyclists assaulted him, intent on robbing him of his Gold Medal and lynching him for daring to enter a White-owned business. They were a threat, therefore he fought back.
After becoming completely disillusioned with his nation as a result of this racial injustice, he threw his Gold Medal into the Ohio River. Sakshi Malik, Vinesh Phogat, and Bajrang Punia all want to throw their medals from the Olympics, Asian Games, Commonwealth Games, and World Wrestling Championships into the Ganges because the government of India refuses to arrest the leader of their federation and the ruling party, whom they accuse of sexually harassing and molesting numerous women.
In the United States of America today, the value of a Black Life has changed. A Black man has served as president of the country. Even though it has been 76 years since we gained our independence, our emerging country is just as repressive as it was under British control.
