You may not be my generation. But, if you are a movie lover like me, you will remember Terence Hill and Bud Spencer from the 1970s for their spaghetti westerns and action comedies. Their popularity among Italian actors. They adapted Sergio Leone’s grim Westerns, popularized by Clint Eastwood and Lee Van Cliff, into family-friendly comedy.
These cowboys were attractive and gentlemanly, skilled with weapons and cards, and quick at the piano. Ladies of easy virtue encouraged them to dance in the barroom.
The brothers originally featured in They Call Me Trinity in 1971 as bounty hunters who team up to protect Mormon settlers from Mexican bandits. This was a huge success due to its wild humor. Terence Hill, is more gorgeous than most Hollywood actors, with the most striking blue eyes. He was athletic and added grace, elegance, and slapstick humor to his active battle sequences. Bud Spencer, a bulky guy with half-closed eyelids, a scruffy beard, and ham-like fists, defeated all enemies with a single punch to the skull. In one movie, he fought former World Heavyweight Boxing champion Joe Bugner in the closing scene. Together, they created 18 movies.
Everyone was quite entertaining. Their plans were simple. The conversations were more basic. Special effects and camera trickery were absent. Car chases and love scenes are off. The movies entertained you for an hour and 30 minutes, leaving you content and joyful.
I grew up watching Terrence Hill and Bud Spencer. To my joy, their movies are now available on Netflix and Amazon Prime Video. Yesterday, a wet Sunday, I stayed home to keep my feet dry. In 1974, I witnessed their biggest hit, Watch Out We’re Mad. I’ve seen great, serious, and significant movies over time. But, I am grateful for the ability to watch old films that were created only for entertainment.
