Now that the BEST’s iconic double-decker has driven off into the sunset, my question is, does anyone remember the Undertaking’s cumbersome trailer bus? It had a brief run in old Bombay.
Nineteen years, between 1967 and 1986. But unlike the doubledecker, the trailer bus was not phased out gently, it was abruptly taken off the roads without any fanfare. And wiped out of public memory and BEST history just like that. The trailer bus had a curious structure. It was made up of two parts. It had a lower deck and an upper deck and a small mezzanine deck between. This was the trailer part of the bus. Meant to seat 100. The engine was really a tractor with a large cabin meant for the driver and a platform attached to it. The trailer was hooked onto this. And followed jerkily. The
conductor’s bell ran through the lower deck and mezzanine and into the driver’s cabin.
The trailer bus had a limited run because of its size. The BEST picked only those routes for it that had no sharp turns, roundabouts, bridges to cross or go under. It required straight roads. And because it was semi-articulate, not a fixed structure, it
swayed dangerously even while making slow, ponderous progress. Passengers hopped on and off moving trailer buses all the time. Without buying a ticket. Maybe that’s why the BEST discontinued them.
