With the advent of science and Technology, more girls are leaning towards STEM that is Science, Technology Engineering and Mathematics. in days gone by, science was not the field for girls. One such field being coal mining. Is it because of lack of interest or is the social stigma the main reason behind it ?. Women are right now present in every field of work, be it athletics or weightlifting, going to space or working from the cubicle. then why not in Coal mining ?.
Opening the door slowly but steadily
Now, the conservative coal mining industry decided to let women take part in coal mining operations. That’s a big thing for female mining engineers. We at storyofsouls want to see females getting empowered as each day’s pass, we are trying our best towards this initiative. Starting from Coal mining. Let’s first get to know what is coal mining.
Coal Industry.
As we all know, Coal is one of the most important natural resources that is extracted from mines. Fun trivia India started to mine coal in the year 1774, making us the second-largest Coal producer and consumer. Coal is the reason why we have electricity. For 70 years now, men are dominating this industry and women were restricted from the actual mining operation. Even though they could do accounting. Commercial and personnel jobs in this field. New Beginning
In the tune of the Army opening closed doors of opportunity for females, coal mining industry is following the suit by opening its conservative doors. Soon female miners will be seen in the underground mines working. The first company to do so M/S. Central Coalfields Ltd. This Ranchi based wholly subsidiary of Coal India Ltd has selected a female miner for the first time, Ms Akanksha Kumari, to work in Churi underground Coal mine in North Karanpura. The location of this site is in Jharkhand, Hazaribagh District.
Doing the unbelievable tasks
M/s Akanksha Kumari will soon take up the role of a coal mining engineer. Making her the first female coal miner in the country. She finds this industry to be very encouraging for herself as well as cordial. Ms. Akanksha is truly a role model for all the girls who wants to enter the mining industry. To celebrate the world’s Women’s day, the Indian Coal forum decided to organize a webinar with the theme ‘Women in Mining Industry’ on 8th March. The forums include all members that consist of retired and serving distinguished Mining Engineers and also civil servants. They have made significant contributions in the field of the Coal Industry and made it grow. The current head of the forum is Shri Alok Petri, IAS (Retd), former secretary, Ministry of Coal with Dr M. P. Narayanan, Former Chairman, Coal India Ltd as Chairman and Shri S. K. Chowdhary, Former Chairman, Coal India Ltd. as President of the Governing Body. These dignitaries have always tried to find the problem areas requiring attention.

The Webinar will be opened with a welcome address by Chairman, Shri Alok Perti, and will be followed by felicitations to Ms. Akanksha Kumari, the first Lady Mining Engineer engaged in Underground Coal Mines in Coal India Ltd. and address by the First Lady Mining Machinery Manufacturer in India Ms Nandini Chakravarty, MD, Mine Line Pvt Ltd. The highlight of the Webinar will follow – two Keynote addresses by Ms. Nirupama Kotru, IRS, Joint Secretary & Financial Adviser, Ministry of Coal & Mines and Ms Michelle Manook, CEO, World Coal Association while Ms Nirupama Kotru’s talk with deal with the Indian Perspective that from Ms Michelle Manook will deal with International Perspective.
