The Ambassador struck me as a robust, large, and pleasant vehicle. With a bouncing, high body, and lovely rolling windows. It had good shock absorbers, so you didn’t feel too much of the bumps. Though there were no potholes in Bombay at the time since the civic administration was clean and road resurfacing contracts were not awarded to family and friends.
In the 1970s, I took an Ambassador on a road trip to Goa. The driver was a seasoned Bombay cabbie who breezed along National Highway 66 to Panjim. We arrived in Goa in 12 hours, only stopping for lunch and gas. The Ambassador didn’t even get hot.
However, in the 1980s, it faced competition from Sanjay Gandhi’s Maruti. The Maruti was zingy and snappy. It was far less expensive than the Ambassador. It is also simpler to maintain. When it came down to it, the poor Ambassador had to go. It was only nostalgia that remained.
However, I’ve learned that the Ambassador will make a come back on roads as an electric vehicle. The ‘Amby’ will reappear in a sleek new incarnation.
Hindustan Motors and Peugeot are working on their design, which will undergo significant revision. The new Amby has nothing in common with the old plough horse of Indian roads. But, the big question now is will the new ‘Amby’ have the same effect as its predecessor?
