You may be in both Maharashtra and Gujarat at the same time at the Navapur Railway Station. The Western Railway’s Navapur Station is a destination of mine. That’s something you’d see in Ripley’s Believe It or Not!
Maharashtra is home to half of the station. Gujarat houses the remaining half. The boundary between the states divides the terminals in half. Its walls are white. And it passes right through a historic wooden bench, a favorite resting spot for sightseers. The bench-riding passengers might be from either Maharashtra or Gujarat. Those in this station might theoretically hop, skip, and jump across state lines while waiting for the Express, Mail, or Superfast trains.
Navapur may be found in two different Gujarati districts: Tapi and Nandurbar. The total length of the station is 800 feet; 500 of those are in Gujarat and 300 are in Maharashtra. Gujarati and Marathi are used for public announcements. In Hindi and English versions. The Nandurbar side of Navapur is home to the train station and ticket office.
Tapi’s station lobby, restrooms, and office of the station master. There is a landmark at the station that tells you what state you are now in. In and around Navapur, the legislation is questionable.
Prohibition exists in Gujarat. In fact, it’s been in effect since 1960. If you sat on the Maharashtra side of the bench, however, you would not be infringing the Gujarat Prohibition Act by drinking alcohol. Also prohibited in Maharashtra are Paan Masala and Gutka.
The situation is different in Gujarat. If you sit on the Gujarat side of the bench and use these tobacco products, you are not breaking the law. I have no idea if daredevils actually engage in such behavior. But this is something that could only take place in India.
