Everybody has an old favorite coffee mug or tea cup that broke and which they didn’t have the heart to junk. Mine is this one from 1983. Lionel Richie, the American singer, and musician asks, “Hello, is it Tea you’re looking for?” In the original version, the line is “Hello, is it me that you seek?” The song is from Richie’s 1983 album, ‘Can’t Slow Down,’ which features the hit song “Hello.”. Some marketing genius twisted the verse and came up with this gift mug.
I used to drink coffee from it for 30-odd years till the handle broke. Unwilling to get rid of the mug, I used its body as a vase for a Money Plant that sits on my desk. The plant grows quickly and makes me feel like my money is multiplying. I cut off the new branches with their shiny, heart-shaped leaves and present them to others. This is said to symbolize sharing of wealth. Legend has it that to become richer yourself, you must steal a Money Plant if nobody gives you one.
Another belief is that if the Money Plant thrives in your house, you will never be short of money. The Botany books, which call it Epipremnum Aureum, indicate no such luck. The all-knowing Google informs me that the Money Plant is known by many names, including Golden Pothos, Ceylon Creeper, Hunter’s Robe, and Taro Vine. Also, Devil’s Ivy, because it is impossible to kill and will remain green even if kept in the dark.
My coffee mug Money Plant is a hardy, resilient and evergreen vine. I don’t fuss over it. Or follow Vastu tips and keep it at a South-East window or North-facing door. It is said to filter the air, produce fresh oxygen, activate positive energy, and minimize stress and negativity. Maybe it does. I keep it because the broken mug tells me never to give up. And reminds me that I don’t need riches to be happy. Sometimes even a simple Money Plant will do.
