It’s been raining heavily in the past week. And, as a result, my building is suddenly overrun by the feline species. There are cats and kittens everywhere. On the landing, below the staircase, under the cars, perched on window ledges, and even up in the trees. All sizes and colors. Including a fully black one with bright green eyes like the cat in the fairy tale where the witch wearing a black cloak and pointed hat flies on a broomstick. Every time I open my door, there’s a cat waiting outside with an inquiring expression. A kindly family in the building feeds them expensive cat food imported from Thailand. So the cats have lost their feral habits and the feel for the outdoors. They hang around the building waiting for their next meal. And get into fierce fights that keep the residents up at night.
I thought I knew them all. Until Mr. Grumpy showed up one exceptionally heavy rainy afternoon. He’s a rusty striped tomcat with an attitude. I like to think of him as Mr. Grumpy because, well, have you ever seen a cat with a more grumpier look? It’s not as if he’s disagreeable or snappish. He just can’t help having such grouchy air. I don’t know where he came from. He was suddenly here. Perhaps the word gets around among the neighborhood cats that there are gourmet meals to be had here four times a day. So cats from far and wide pad up. Mr. Grumpy hangs out beneath my car. I have to chase him out every time I use the car. He goes some distance away, turns, and gives me a reproachful look. I don’t know whether to feel sorry for him or laugh at his comical disapproval!
