Know what I’m craving? A glass of Matka ka Pani. Back in those days when not every
family could afford a fridge, and water filters and purifiers were not heard of, every home had an earthen Matka used to store drinking water. It would stand in the kitchen in a corner. A plump, round pot of clay sometimes attached with a steel or brass tap. When you came home, the first thing you did was drink a glass of Matka ka Pani. More by habit more than to quench your thirst. And, by God, it tasted amazing. Like nothing on earth. It was very comforting and satisfying as well. I remember the taste of the Matka ka Pani every time I reach into the fridge now and pull out a bottle of cold water when I get home. Not even a chilled beer comes close to it.
Back then, we didn’t give much thought to the Matka ka Pani. But today I am learning that the clay pot was a natural insulator that kept the water cool for long periods. The pots had the USP to reduce the temperature of the water in accordance with the climate. And the clay used in the pots had minerals and electromagnetic energy that re-energized the body and compensated for the loss of power caused by the scorching sun. The Matka ka Pani maintained the body’s glucose in the correct amounts and prevented heat stroke in the summer. It was effective against acidity and other gastronomic disorders too and boosted
metabolism levels. Who would have thought? I’m going to the local market to buy a Matka today. More out of nostalgia than for the health benefits.
