It was a monthly ritual to visit Martin’s grandma. He and his parents would take a morning train and be back home the same evening.
One day Martin asked his parents if he could travel alone to see his grandma as he was a grown-up boy.
After much discussion, they decided to give him a chance to travel all by himself. The next day they were all at the station waiting for the train to depart. His parents bid him, and goodbye and also gave him a few tips to follow.
As the train was about to leave Martin’s father quickly murmured in his ears that if he felt bad or insecure, there was something for him in his pocket.
As the train started, Martin felt alone as it was his first trip without his parents. He looked outside the window admiring the beautiful landscape. Many strangers pushed their way around him and made a lot of noise. There was continuous moving in and out of the train by people. The conductor also ridiculed Martin for being alone, few people gave him strange looks with sadness in their eyes.
Martin felt uneasy with every passing time. He started to get scared and felt cornered and alone. With tears in his eyes, as he put his head down, he remembered that his dad had put something for him in his pocket. He hurriedly pulled the piece of paper from his pocket and started to read it.
It said, “Son, I am in the last railway car!”
This simply means that when children grow up and when the time comes we should let them go and give them the freedom to explore new things. If need be, we should be in the last car, watching them and in case of any difficulties or in a situation when they are scared or alone and are clueless about what to do.
As parents, we always want to be close to our children as long as we are still alive.
