A friend asked me this morning if I had ever had an existential crisis. The reality is, I was unaware of what it was. So I was certain I had never suffered it. But later on, I Googled the term and learned that in psychology and psychotherapy an existential crisis is an inner conflict characterized by the impression that life lacks meaning. It is accompanied by anxiety and stress to such a degree, that they often disturb your normal functioning in everyday life and lead to depression. When we feel uneasy about life’s meaning, choices, and freedom, we are experiencing an existential crisis. The main concerns are that life is pointless, that our existence has no meaning because there are boundaries to it, and that we all must die someday.
I have never suffered from this neurosis. Though I am as mortal as anybody. Your life is all about what you make of it. In my experience, there is no such thing as a happiness pill. I find that the sum of life’s little joys and simple pleasures add up to a meaningful picture. Don’t go in search of spiritual enlightenment, the truth, and fulfillment. It will lead to an existential crisis. Make your peace with what you have in life. I get ridiculous highs from ordinary, everyday things like a mug of coffee, a snifter of brandy, a Cuban cigar, an engrossing book, profound music, a captivating movie, a chat with an old and dear friend, a walk along the seafront, a soul-satisfying meal. They make me happy. Give me a reason to live. And that is what everyone wants…
