After a few seconds, her coach, four-time Olympic medalist Andrea Fuentes, rapidly scanned the pool surface and made a split-second choice. She dived into the pool and saved Alvarez, who was drowning.
This picture should serve as a reminder of the value of coaching and mentoring.
This coach was able to detect when Alvarez was in the water for longer than she should have been. This coach was eager to assist. This coach was willing to make a save.
While others stood on the sidelines, one coach took action. A coaching connection is unidirectional. To develop a successful mentoring relationship, however, trust, recognition of each other’s goals, and a commitment to helping one other improvements are required.
We witness far too many young people drowning right in front of us, particularly at work and in other settings. We watch as many others walk away while someone takes their own life as a result of the stress of handling life’s obstacles. Everyone requires assistance.
