“It takes nothing away from a human to be kind to an animal.”
This story is about Dr. Mala Mattha, who is based in Udaipur, Rajasthan. She is a warm and kind-hearted human being dedicated to loving and saving animals.
As humans, we all help each other but how many such people do we know who go all out to take care of innocent and voiceless animals? Pain or hunger, she understands their language. Her unconditional love is heart-touching and inspirational.
Her passion started and grew, she did not set boundaries. Over the years she continued to do everything possible for them along with her dedicated team.
In the year 2020, when the deadly covid crept into the world and people were finding means to protect themselves and their families, nobody thought of animals around them. Not only humans but animals around the world were also in danger. But unfortunately, our focus was to save ourselves from the deadly disease. People did not have time to think about how they would be fed or taken care of. People could not do much because the situation was grave, and movement was limited. That’s when Dr. Mala and her team stepped in. She was a blessing as she along with her team took care of over 1000 animals. She rescued and fed them selflessly. She worked relentlessly throughout and made sure as many street animals were fed and given shelter.
Dr. Mala is an animal rescuer; her love for them is beyond words. She runs a charity for animals by the name Animal Protection Society, Udaipur. They take care of stray animals and feed them with all the available resources.
Dr. Mattha completed her graduation in 2007 and holds an MBA degree in Hospital Management and also a Ph.D. in Hospital Management.
She has been running the animal welfare activity for 10 years along with her team who are equally devoted to the cause of caring for animals. Her love and care helped save many animals who otherwise could have died in different conditions. Besides food, they were given shelter too. All this was done with whatever resources she had.
Dr. Mala has been felicitated and recognized with many awards. In the year 2020, she was awarded Udaipur Ratan for her endless work in the field of animal welfare. Her exceptional work has been appreciated and awarded by many organizations. Along with her team, they are in a constant endeavor to protect and save the animals.
Dr. Mala Mattha in association with various NGOs and social groups works selflessly for many animals. With the same vision in their hearts, they do as much as possible. Her dream is to give every animal shelter and to keep them safe. In adverse weather conditions, she works harder for them. In summer when the heat reaches its highest point in Rajasthan, many animals go look around for food, water, and shelter. When Dr. Mala saw this, she thought of setting up small water tanks. The stray animals have to be protected the most by rain, heat, or severe cold.
It is just not just weather conditions that affect their life, many animals around the world die of accidents. In India alone, nearly 50 animals die every day, meaning 2 animals die every hour.
On roads, there are warning signs to save humans from accidents, there are technologies that warn us of a possible accident that could happen. But how can we save these innocent animals? In most cases very few come forward to help or save them. Animals who fall sick or meet with an accident in a radius of 100 km within the city are rescued and given first aid. And after they cure, they are taken back to the village and left. As per government policy, animals cannot be relocated to any other place apart from the place they were picked from.
Dr. Mala was concerned about the safety of those animals who lived around the highway. We all are aware of the speeding vehicles which run on highways. In such situations, it is bound that while crossing the road stray animals could get hit by vehicles. After much thought, Dr. Mala came up with a brilliant idea of making them wear Radium collars so that drivers would be more careful and could avert any accident.
Her dedication and compassion for animals are very noble. Besides providing food, Dr. Mala has close to 200 water tanks installed for cows and dogs and also hanging pots for birds.
We all are aware that urbanization has not only affected the lives of human beings but also many animals and birds. Trees have been cut for construction and development, in such a scenario, birds have no place to build nests. They build their nest in unsafe places. Keeping this problem in mind, Dr. Mala Mattha prepared 100 artificial nests out of round mud piggy banks which she bought from the local market. To help birds breed and lay eggs, she made holes in each pot, made it look attractive, and hung it in places most suitable for them. Also, mud nests were distributed free of cost to people so that they could hang them on their home balconies, and the birds could find their safe homes.
Social work comes with big responsibilities. Her passion is very close to her heart and for that purpose, she did not marry. This social work was started by her father, after his death 7 years back, she wanted to take it forward and do more. Dr. Mala is jointly running the Animal Protection Society with Mr. Vishal Hiloriya, they met in 2017. During corona, they formed a team of Animal lovers.
The purpose and Motto of APS, Udaipur is to Protect, Rescue, and Adopt stray dogs, and cats. Give them first aid. Conduct rescue operations along with the local municipal cooperation of Udaipur. Conduct regular Feeding programs for stray animals. Fighting against animal cruelty is also an important agenda. Her team carries out regular awareness camps at schools, colleges, public places, and corporate spaces.
Animal Protection Society was formed during corona on 11th September 2021, it is just 1 ½ yrs. It is a non-government organization. Currently, they do not have 12 A and 80 G certificates. This certificate is given to NGOs only upon completion of 3 years. When people give donations to NGOs, they expect a valid certificate to get tax benefits. So, this is a major challenge, the team faces while raising funds from people.
Dr. Mala is an active member of the SPCA and ABC committees. She has been designated as an Honorary Animal Welfare Officer of the Udaipur district of the Animal welfare Board of India. She is currently employed by Geetanjali Medical College and Hospital in Udaipur as an Incharge compliance officer in the social welfare department.
Dr. Mala Mattha along with Mr. Vishal and her team are on a mission to safeguard innocent animals from all the cruelty, to ensure they get a safe environment, and they too get unconditional love.
