Her father said to her, “As you have graduated, I honor you by gifting you this car, which I had attained years ago. It is a Dodge and is several years old and belonged to my grandfather. But wait I want you to take it to the used car showroom, see what they offer for it and then only I will give it to you.
Embarrassed, the daughter drove the battered old automobile to the used car showroom, hoping nobody would see her. Returning to her father she angrily told him, “They offered me Rs. 5,000 because it looks very used, worn out, and is now falling apart. I can’t understand why you’ve kept it so long.”
Undeterred by his daughter’s discomfort, the father then said, “Take the car to the scrapyard and see what price they’ll pay for it.” Fuming, the daughter went to the scrapyard, returned to her father, and said furiously, “They laughed and offered me only Rs. 1,000 because it is just a worthless piece of junk.”
The father next asked his daughter to go to a Vintage Car Club and show them the car. The daughter reluctantly took the car to the club, returned, and excitedly told her father, “People were fighting to bid for the car. One person offered me Rs. 25
The father then explained, always remember that the right place values the right thing at the right time, in the right manner. If you are not valued, do not be disappointed, it means you are in the wrong place. Those who know your value will be those who really appreciate you. Never stay in a place where no one recognizes your worth.”
