A brief about Joe
A man from Indiana has shared the memories of a terrible single-vehicle crash that occurred 5 years ago and left him badly injured. Joe Green accepted that his decision to drink and drive during the 2016 crash is ‘a seriously bad decision.’ in his life. The fiery crash devastated Green, but the strong-willed man has since bounced back. This 37-year-old man expresses gratitude to his family for their support that enabled him to overcome the unforgettable pain of the crash.
Green is now living a life of a differently-abled and says, “I will live with the repercussions of that bad decision for the rest of my life.” But, the crash has failed to break his spirit. It’s noteworthy that Green has also found love with a nurse since the crash occurred. He says, “So many differently-abled people think they cannot find love, but if I can so can you!”
Green also says we are stronger than we think we are. Indeed such an inspiring story that he is creating for himself. As each day pass by.
Green recalls the incident of crash
Green’s story starts on Saturday, April 9 of the year 2016. It started out like any other Saturday with him going to work. His mom and brother invited him for dinner after his shift. Green was happy to go, and they ate and drank a couple of beers. He then went to his mom’s house to play a few games of pool (billiards). Green had a couple more beers there and decided it was time to leave.
He originally intended to go straight home, but ended up stopping by a bar on his way home. He was trying to blow off steam from a terrible week at work as many people do. This turned out to be a horrible decision for Green that night, though.
He drank quite a few beers at the bar and then got in his truck to drive home, and no one stopped him. Green took off down the road and didn’t make it far before he started dozing off, as he was drunk and tired.
Those hours
At one point, his foot slammed down on the gas pedal while he fell asleep for a few seconds. It sent Green flying almost 90mph before he woke up. Green hit the brakes, but it was too late because there was a sharp curve coming up. He lost control of the truck and fish-tailed off the road at about 80mph. Green hit an enormous boulder and went up and over it, puncturing his gas
tank and setting it ablaze.
Major injuries
The truck hit the ground and started flipping before it threw him out about 40 or 50 feet. Green landed on his left side, instantly breaking his left clavicle and knocking it out of the shoulder joint, broke and fractured several ribs, left lung collapsed, fractured his pelvis, dislocated other joints, and other minor injuries.
That all happened in an instant, and Green’s truck was still flipping. The truck threw him out ahead of it and somehow the vehicle landed on top of him. The truck was upside down and Green was underneath its bed, right by the gas tank. After it was punctured on the boulder, the truck caught fire. As Green couldn’t move, he had to lay there being burned alive, and awake through the whole thing. Green suffered 3rd and 4th-degree burns on 50% of his body.
That man – rescue like a GOD
The woman’s property he wrecked on heard the wreck and called an ambulance. She also got her husband up out of bed and he came running to help Green. He ran over to the flames like a hero and pulled Green out from underneath the wreckage. The man also smothered the flames on Green’s lower half.
Green says “I owe that man my life.” How the crash changed Green’s life forever Green lost everything but his life in that wreck and it changed everything forever. He was sent by a Lifeline helicopter to a hospital 60 miles away that has a burn center. Those were the most serious of his injuries, so that’s where he had to go. They put Green in a medically induced coma for the first 2 weeks.
During that time they amputated both of his legs below the knee and amputated most of his penis. They also started doing skin graft surgeries to cover the burned areas of his body. Green spent 4 months there. He had over 10 surgeries, mostly skin grafts where they would take good skin from his stomach, sides, and back to put on his lower half that was burned.
He lost everything, except for breath!
Green ended up losing his house while in the hospital, lost his truck, obviously, lost his job, among other things. He went to live at his mother’s house after he was discharged from the hospital. Green says his mother was kind enough to take a stray dog in. She was and still is a huge support for Green and he appreciates her for that every day. The first year and a half were very rough, and painful beyond explanations. However. It took a good year for all of Green’s wounds to heal. He then had complications with his skin grafts for another 6 months.
After Green attain the position to discharge, he got the prosthetic legs built. However, that has turned out to be a nightmare for him and he has had problems trying to walk in prosthetics for the last 5 years. Green has finally found a surgeon that has already done one surgery on him back in October to help him walk again. The surgeon will do another soon. These should help Green to walk again. There was one other surgery he has had since the wreck and that was a little over 2 years ago now.
Joe had his penis reconstructed. It gave him back urinary and sexual function. Green had a catheter in for 3 years before this surgery and he no longer needed it now. It’s amazing what they can do. Green has a fully functioning penis back. Green expresses gratitude to his loved ones for helping him bounce back!
He is grateful to his family
Apart from his mother, Green says he has had an overall wonderful support system too. Green’s sister has helped a lot, his stepdad, a few friends, and more recently his girlfriend. Green’s girlfriend is a nurse and has a very loving personality. So he says she’s been great to have the last 18 months of his life.
He is always working to improve his situation. Right now, Green’s focus is mainly on trying to walk again. He is hoping after this next surgery on his legs that will be more workable. He does not believe in giving up or ever counting himself out. Sure, Green has bad days and even some terrible days, but those make the good days that much better.
His message for all those who love Alcohol
He says those bad days make Green appreciate the good ones more. He hopes people see him and understand that we are stronger than we give ourselves credit for. Green also says people have to know what they are capable of. He always tells people to keep going and keep pushing because he believes we all can.
