My, how the mighty have fallen. Imran Khan, once handsome as sin and world cricket’s glamorous poster boy, then Pakistan’s rising political hero whom the electorate believed in because he was also that nation’s World Cup-winning captain and a sports legend, is now reduced to being a prisoner in the notorious Attock Prison of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province on the banks of the Indus River serving a three-year sentence. If it’s any consolation to Imran, Pakistan has a chequered political history of arresting its Prime Ministers and allowing the military to intervene and run the country. But his incarceration, for corruption while being Prime Minister, could end Imran’s anyway shaky political career. The sentence could bar him from politics under a law that prohibits anyone with a criminal conviction from
holding or running for public office. Politics is the last resort of scoundrels. And Imran had really no
need to dip the pristine hands that once took down the world’s leading batsmen in that dirty pool. Unless, of course, he was a closet megalomaniac obsessed with delusions of grandeur and
power. He should have gracefully retired like our Kapil Dev and Sunil Gavaskar, his contemporaries, and taken up coaching, commentary, or modeling (like them) and still remained a hero. Instead, look where Imran Khan is today. In Pakistan’s infamous Attock Prison known for its harsh conditions and whose other
inmates include convicted militants. It has the strictest security of all, armed guards in watchtowers, and barricades that block all roads leading to it. Imran’s lawyers and party workers are unable to
reach him and so is the media. Nobody knows what’s happening in Pakistan and to its great sporting hero.
