Here’s what occurred when a very affluent father sent his son to the country with the sole goal of showing him what it was like to be poor. The father and son stayed on the farm of a very impoverished family for a few days and nights.
After they arrived home, the father inquired about his son’s impressions of the vacation. “It was fantastic, Dad,” the son responded. “Did you notice how destitute people maybe?” inquired the father. “Oh yeah,” the son said.
The father asked the boy what he learned from the trip. The boy replied he saw that the father and son only had one dog while the poor family had four.
He continued, “We have a pool that extends all the way to the center of our garden, and they have an endless creek. In our garden, we have imported lanterns that display the stars at night. Our patio extends all the way to the front yard, and they have the entire horizon to themselves. They have fields that extend far beyond our view, but we just have a small plot of land to live on.
We have servants who assist us, but they also assist others. We have fences around our land to protect ourselves, and they have pals to protect the poor family.”
The boy concluded by saying that the trip showed him just how destitute the father and son really were. The father was unable to say anything after that.
Moral of the story
The story shows that what is a worthless object to one person is a valued asset to another. Sometimes it takes a child’s viewpoint to remind us of what’s important.
