A huge heart attack claimed the life of Rajiv Kapoor. He was 58 years old. There isn’t much to say about Rajiv, the youngest son of Raj Kapoor and brother of Randhir and Rishi. But those who knew him recount his tragedy. Despite his desire to be an actor, destiny never favored him. He was born into the film industry. However, Bollywood can be as cold and heartless as it is welcoming. It was just that he wasn’t accepted.
The directors wanted Rajiv to be like his legendary uncle Shammi Kapoor. He looked like the younger version of Shammi. During his formative years, his acting brought together the tragedy of his father, the mischievous romance of his uncle Shashi Kapoor, and the wild enjoyment of Shammi. Despite a couple of hits and a few flops, Bollywood rejected him. A true Kapoor, he thus turned to production and directing. He kept the RK Studios banner flying.
He made a late and shy entrance to parties every time I saw him. I never knew him. Touching the feet of his father and uncles’ contemporaries and the elder members of the party. He was excited this week since, on Valentine’s Day, he would announce his return to Bollywood after three decades. But I do not believe anybody’s blessings would help when Life itself was giving him a difficult time. That also is Life.
As a recluse, he maintained the Kapoor tradition of eating and drinking heavily away from the limelight. Although he never reached any of their highs. Just sharing their joys was all he wanted to do. Living the life of someone stardom forgot about. His films were a failure, his series was a failure, and his marriage also failed. We lost another Kapoor. I’m glad the entire industry came to say goodbye.
