On their birthdays, some actors may count their years but Jackie Shroff counts his blessings. It’s hard to believe, it’s hard to accept that he is 64 today. The vanguard of Hindi cinema is now an old guard. I love him so much. He once told me, “Go with what you want, but stay honest, and don’t hurt anyone, because the most important thing in life is what you want – to have a blissful sleep” I still remember that.
This was the 1980’s. He was Jaggu Dada. Screenplay with a solid, street-playing simulation game. Making twelve films a year. Bringing box-office hats where his hearty performance is highly praised. He was lucky. Some of the actors were traveling in a car driver driven by a foreign car with bright glass, Jackie was driving an open-air Maruti Gypsy with panache and was praised by street children.
Then Jackie went into the fire. Films dwindled, he neglected at home, his stony marriage, and his gruesome work on a printing press. The sharp edge of beauty was replaced by the radiant appearance of the earthling man. The chutzpah was still there, but it had a mature footprint, and his mind was now full of the wisdom and knowledge of the evil lessons of life.
But life has turned into a circle. And Jackie is back in the game. He has done Akshay Kumar’s ‘Sooryavanshi’, Salman Khan’s ‘Radhe’ and John Abraham’s ‘Mumbai Saga’. All great movies. He has acted in films and no other actor could have touched him. I asked him why. Jackie told me, “I listen to my heart. If someone tells me if you make this film my life and career will change, how can I agree? “That’s why she sleeps well at night. Happy Birthday, Duck.
