On the day of October 2, 1990, Mukesh, Rekha’s husband, decided to quit the world. He had killed himself by hanging to the ceiling fan of his room, with his wife’s dupatta.
His brother Anil reported that Mukesh seemed to be happy on a fateful day
Rekha came to know about Mukesh’s chronic depression post-marriage.
WHAT FOLLOWED:
1. There was a national witchhunt that followed. A lot of people hated and shamed her as a cold-hearted man-eater all over the country.
2. The wail of Mukesh’s mother made headlines, ‘Woh daayan mere bete ko kha gayi. Bhagwan use kabhi maaf nahi karega.’ (I lost my son to that witch. The supreme power will never forgive her.)
3. “My brother loved Rekha deeply. He could not at all accept her act and behavior. Now what is she looking for, does she want our money?” Anil Gupta said.
4. Subhash Ghai said “Rekha has left a stain on the film industry that will be difficult to remove. After this, I think any respectable family would think twice before accepting an actress as their girl. She’ll have a tough time even professionally. It will never be possible for a conscientious director to work with her again. Is she going to be accepted by the audience as Bharat ki nari or insaf ki devi?”
5. Anupam Kher said “In the eyes of many, she is the national vamp. I believe that she has reached the end of her career, both professionally and personally. If I come face to face with her, I’m not sure how I’ll react.”
6. Reports with outrageous headlines such as ‘The Black Widow’ (Showtime, November 1990) and ‘The Macabre Truth behind Mukesh’s Suicide’ (Cine Blitz, November 1990) flooded the media with sensational reports about Mukesh’s suicide. Rekha’s ‘murder’ of Mukesh Agarwal was vociferously condemned by Delhi’s high society and the Bombay film industry.
