I am pleased that Lady Justice revealed the abuse, inequity, and unfairness in our criminal justice system for almost seven decades, hours before our 77th Independence Day. It was heartless the whole time.
Vacuously functioned as a rusty remnant of British equipment. Whose toothed wheels strained even in high gear to produce justice slowly. In Greek mythology, the blindfold symbolized impartial justice, ignoring extraneous factors such as riches, power, gender, race, and others. However, not yet in our nation.
However, there is cause to celebrate. The administration introduced three measures in the Lok Sabha to replace the outdated British statutes that underpin Indian criminal law. These include the Indian Penal Code (1860), Criminal Procedure Act (1898), and Evidence Act (1872). Although it may be a late attempt to “erase all signs of British slavery,” the government’s resolve to modernize the criminal justice system and ensure timely justice delivery is commendable.
Certainly, there will be extensive debate about this. As well as the opposition. However, it is a positive move. Especially if the change targets offenses relating to women. Justice must be both done and shown to be done. High time.
