Lapierre was staying at the Trident in Mumbai. And he invited me to have lunch with him. I went imagining a fine wining and dining experience at the hotel’s French cuisine restaurant. Instead, Lapierre summoned me up to his suite. Where he was perched on the window sill. With his back turned to the magnificent sweep of Marine Drive and the restless Arabian Sea. He was an extremely funny man. To me, he said in wry amusement with a naughty smile, “I asked for a table by the window. Look where they seated me.” Our lunch was Chicken Tandoori, Butter Naan, and Coke.
He was dressed in his trademark pin-striped blue shirt and straw hat. His feet propped on the back of a chair to keep his balance. I thought he looked and ate an NYPD detective from a Hollywood movie of the 1970s. It turned out he loved Indian food. “The diversity of the cuisines is astounding,” he said. And he was pleased that Indian food was available all over the world. “Back in my hometown in the South of France, there is an Indian restaurant that goes by the extraordinary name of the man who undertook hunger fasts to obtain freedom for India. It is called Gandhi. Which is a paradox. But the food there is good.”
