A few years ago, when I was struggling to overcome the grief I was going through over the loss of my only brother, somebody gave me a tiny Angel figurine made of Rose Quartz. The crystal of
Love and Relationships, deep Inner Healing, and feelings of Peace. Pale pink in color, the featureless Angel with open wings at the back had a translucent transparency and a glassy luster. It fit into
my palm. Radiating a silent strength. Not knowing what to do with the Angel, I put it on my bookshelf alongside other figures of spirituality in wood, brass, marble, stone, china, and glass. Among
them Buddha, Lord Ganesha, the Prophet Zarathustra, and a miniature model of the imposing Jesus Christ the Redeemer statue of Rio in Brazil with arms outstretched. Do I believe in Angels? Not exactly. I believe in the Universe. In there is a greater force. And in the benevolent spirits of departed loved
ones watching over us protectively from the other side. Which is neither an unusual belief nor a universally held one.
But then yesterday I read that in America, which like India is a melting pot of all religions, according to a poll, seven out of ten adults believe in Angels. Their belief was on par with their belief in Heaven and the power of Prayer. Americans felt Angels had more credence than the Devil, than Hell, than Astrology and
Reincarnation, and physical things with spiritual energies. Hollywood movies were made on Angels and Billboard chart-busting songs written on them. They featured in Fairy tales, in Christmas stories and War chronicles. Amused, I filed the information away at the back of my mind. But at night, when I turned the lights out and went to bed, out of the corner of my eye for the first time I saw the Angel on my bookshelf glowing in the dark. It had a luminescence I had never noticed before. I looked at it more closely. The tiny Angel stared back at me impassively. It seemed to say, “Believe in me – I have your back.” So, do I believe
in Angels today? Not wholly. But I am glad for the one watching me from my bookshelf…
