As Cyclone Biparjoy barrels down the Arabian Sea, causing hundreds of thousands of people living along the south-west coasts of India and even Pakistan to leave their homes and flee to safety, my thoughts go to the men manning the lighthouses in
these troubled waters. Cyclones fascinate me. And I watched in awe on TV news the majesty and might of Biparjoy as it wickedly stirred the depths of the Arabian Sea to send gigantic tidal waves, extremely heavy rains, and winds gusting up to 150 mph to
coastal Kutch and Karachi. The image that stayed with me is of a lonely lighthouse in Saurashtra taking a terrible battering from the fearsome waves and the torrential rain. Making me wonder about the poor lighthouse keeper. Some lighthouses are right out in the sea. Cut off from land. What do these lighthouse keepers do during cyclones? Are they also evacuated? Or were forced to stay on duty, sounding their fog horns and making sure their lighthouse’s powerful beam scythes through the black night, warning distressed ships of the presence of other vessels helplessly bobbing in the rampaging waters and of the treacherous rocky coastline? The rest of the year, they must
lead dull lives, after all, how much of the sea can you take? Are they now shaken out of their boredom and quaking in fear? Or sitting back to enjoy a grandstand view of the spectacular show? Knowing that cyclones come and go, and huff and puff as mightily
as they want, they cannot knock the lighthouses over?
