Every Christmas, I keep back some of its goodness to take forward with me into the New Year. Like a bottle of rich and zesty French wine that I opened on the 25th. And was reluctant to finish in one go. Or a smooth whisky that had been aged for 12 years in an oak cask and bottled in Scotland. Maybe a box of fat and fine hand-rolled Cuban cigars. Even a Marzipan Stollen from Germany. Perhaps a Panettone from Italy. This time, it is a rich and dark Plum Christmas Pudding got for me by a friend from NSW in Australia. I thought Australia was best known for its wines. Particularly NSW, home of the famous Hunter Valley winery. Plum Puddings rate high there too. The one I have saved for New Year, manufactured by a Kringle & Co., had its mixture of fruits, nuts and spices marinated for months in dark red wine. Then it was steamed, put in sturdy individual plastic containers, festively giftwrapped and sent on its way to food counters in departments stores and airports around the world. One of which, God bless, came to me. It is soft and moist. I will have a small portion on New Year’s eve. My mouth exploding with the flavors of chopped raisins, cherries, red and black currants, tutti-frutti, orange peel, dates, walnuts, sultanas, apricots, apple puree, prunes, bread crumbs, ginger, figs, nutmeg, caraway seeds, mace, cloves, vanilla, cardamom, cinnamon, caramel, sugar, salt, eggs and the butter in its mixture. And the heady aroma of the wine. I will warm the Plum Pudding gently. Then have it with Vanilla Ice-cream or Custard. I haven’t decided yet.
