When we think of chapatti we know for a fact it is the women who have mastered the art. They roll them into round perfect circles like children would use a compass to make circles. But to think of it, I strongly feel that every man should also know to make chapatti. I admit that I don’t know and am sure many of my friends also don’t know to make it either. Except for professional chefs. But I am 100% sure that by the weekend I would have learned to roll out chapattis.
A humble sight from my kitchen window has given me the boost to achieve my goal. Every morning while making tea, I saw a watchman in the neighboring compound n make breakfast for himself.
There was a construction in progress on the plot. As of now, it is just an open pit with blackish water out of which the building’s plinth rises. The watchman lives in a tiny shanty with a few more laborers. Their clothes hang on a clothesline. The black and blue security agency uniform which the man wears proudly, believing that he is posted outside a foreign bank or consulate is a sign of him working as a watchman.
The entire day he is sleeping with his legs resting on a table. As it seems his job
Is less laborious than the other laborers, he has been assigned the duty of making chapattis for all. Because he does not need to toil in the heat, the man admiringly kneads the flour and then like an expert chef rolls out the dough to make perfect round chapattis. In between making chapattis, he wipes out his sweat with the shirt sleeves. He makes a huge stack, putting them on the hot tawa with a cloth from around his neck.
Though it looked simple but still it makes me wonder how many men can really make them.
