Since seeing the first of Sylvester Stallone’s inspirational ‘Rocky’ film franchise in the 1980s, I’ve believed that champions are forged from adversity. So I was very happy to read in the ‘Guardian’ about Adonis Lattimore, a high school boy from Virginia, US, who won a state wrestling title despite being disabled.
Adonis, a Landstown High School student, was born with no right leg, a left leg that stopped in the middle of his thigh, and only one finger on his right hand. These deformities, however, did not deter him from pursuing his aspirations. His tale is inspiring.
And it might be set to Billy Ocean’s 1985 chart-topping hit “When The Going Gets Tough.” As a freshman (first-year student), Adonis qualified for the wrestling regionals, although he didn’t make much progress.
He missed the regional competition as a sophomore (second-year student), and wrestling was canceled last year due to the epidemic. However, as a senior, he continued to work hard and develop.
And this year, his tenacity, determination, and self-belief paid off.
The high schooler claimed first place in the 48 kg weight category at the Virginia state wrestling competition.
Take a look at him on the podium. He triumphed over his adversary.
His coach is then speechless.
Adonis explained, “I’ve been dreaming of this since I knew what it was. I don’t know what more to say.”
The explanation is that champions emerge from adversity.
