Most men cannot change a flat tyre. Myself included. Though I’ve been driving for decades. But strangely, several women can. I discovered this one winter years ago when I was stuck on a lonely road at 2 am with a puncture. There was a spare flat tyre in the dickie. But I had no idea how to change the tyres. Nor could the other men in the car. But an elegant and elderly lady, a renowned doctor, with us knew what to do. She stepped out in the cold and in five minutes changed the tyre. Since then, I made enquiries and found out that while none of my men friends knew how to change a flat tyre, every girl who drove was most comfortable doing so. “You men are from Mars,” one told me impatiently. I didn’t know what she meant.
I have another confession to make and I am a technical idiot. And a financial duffer. I am also mentally challenged when it comes to reading instructions out of a manual and getting some gizmo started. I also suck at replacing bulbs or fixing a fuse. On one classic occasion when the lights had gone out at home the electrician asked me where the mains was. I didn’t know. And I would never dare to attend to a leaky tap. Or repair an electrical appliance that was out of order. I have just learned how to run the geyser and washing machine. They are both in the bathroom. For many winters I switched on the washing machine early morning and had a cold shower thinking that the geyser was taking a long time to get hot!
But I am in distinguished company. My men friends include doctors, lawyers, policemen, journalists, ad and marketing types, chefs, businessmen, captains of industry, actors, all professionals who excel at what they do, but are hopeless when it comes doing domestic chores. But my father, who studied carpentry at boarding school, was a regular handyman. He could fix anything from a broken window to a dysfunctional toilet flush. He thought nothing of painting the house by himself. And my brother, who studied needlework in school, knew how to sew while I struggle to thread a needle still. What amazes me is that most women, from a young age, know how to do all these challenging tasks. Maybe they really are from Venus.
