The first time I met her, Alia Bhatt was 22. That was lesser number of years than I knew some Bollywood actors. But she had already made four films. In two of them, Alia had worn a bikini with great poise and confidence, oozing abundant sex appeal. I’m no expert on cinema. But I know enough about the ways and wiles of girls, young women and old ladies to tell if a member of the species is genuine or faking it. And in my book, Alia was a rock star. Not in the making. She was already there. Her name was up on the marquee in lights. Of how many Bollywood queens and divas could that have been said when they were 22? She was also the ‘butt’ of jokes that were constantly trolled at her naiveté and being described as genuine ‘Aliaisms’. How many Indian actors could claim such an envious if dubious distinction on the Internet except the legendary Rajnikanth? Again, I could not count any. But there she was, four films old at 22 and already a sensation. Her age didn’t match her attitude. Or the other way around. There was something of the little girl in her and also a good bit of the mature woman. She had just signed the destination wedding film ‘Shaandaar’ opposite Shahid Kapoor. When I asked why she picked it, Alia replied because it was “very fairytale where there were castles, horses, stars and dragonflies”. I suspected she had grown up reading Harry Potter. The same Alia naughtily told a popular fashion magazine that dared to ask that “her favourite sex position is the classic ‘Missionary’ because she is a simple person” leaving them wondering whether she was serious. I like that mischievousness in her. And her impulsiveness. It’s like her acting, which is part of her nature, and which she does from instinct. Today, she’s top of her game. Talented directors want to work with her because they think she suits their films. Writers are penning scripts that showcase her as characters that are different from her earlier films. At 22, she was all cuteness, a dimpled smile and innocence. With oodles of talent, of course. At 25, with five back-to-back hits behind her, Alia Bhatt’s a sexy, bold and tremendous actress. Happy Birthday, go kill a few!
