Be Happy
Somebody put this picture up on Facebook. This picture is a common and viral trending picture. This has been shot by someone. There is a lot to say at the moment. I am awestruck by the simple joy on the grubby faces of these barefoot, raggedy village children. They think they are posing for a selfie in their thoughts. At the same time, they are very well aware that is not a reality. As there’s no cell phone with a camera. It is just a bathroom slipper substituting.
Yet, look how happy they are to be in the imaginary frame. Their innocent young faces beaming with delight at this childish make-belief. Look how consciously they pose. Like they have seen adults do. A true definition of Be happy!
The biggest kid with the ‘camera’ is the leader of this ragtag gang. It is an unwritten law in photography. That is the person taking a selfie is always the hero of the picture. Nobody appears bigger or better. So he’s got the angle right, his head tilted, and is preening. These children are making the best of what they have. Unmindful of their poverty. Not hankering for toys and gadgets that will never be theirs. Even to dream of. Or wondering what’s a slipper doing instead of a cell phone. Somebody once told me that happiness is not about getting all you want, it is about enjoying all you have. Even if it’s one odd pair of bathroom slippers. I guess that’s true… Be happy is a state of mind.
