Do you collect fridge magnets? I do. And I have several of them. All clinging to the upper door of the freezer. They remind me of my travels abroad. Every time I open that door, I like to think I am opening my passport and checking the visa entries to see my last ports of call. Many of the magnets were dutifully got for me by friends on their holidays around the world to remind me of the adventure and romance of their travels. I would have preferred alcohol or dark chocolate. But those gifts get consumed quickly and are forgotten. Fridge magnets remain. They are not the next best thing, of course, but a definite improvement on keychains, soaps, pens, and coasters. Those I quietly give away.
What I collect?
I am a memomagnetist. Somebody who collects fridge magnets. My collection includes destination magnets like the Angkor Wat temple of Cambodia, New York with its Statue of Liberty as well as the Brooklyn Bridge, the blue windswept Varadero beach of Cuba, a dog-shaped Australian thermometer, the colorful marine life and exciting watersports of Maldives, a soft Thai elephant and facemask, St. Stephen’s Basilica in Budapest, Victoria Harbour in Hong Kong, the Petra archaeological site in Jordan, Mallorca flamenco dancers of Spain, the Macau skyline, Lithuania’s Gedimas Castle in Vilnius, Atlantis Hotel and a desert safari of Dubai, a London double-decker bus, postbox, cab and the Queen’s Guard at Buckingham Palace, the Singapore lion, the Tiger’s Nest Monastery of Bhutan, a wood-carved Raksha mask of Sri Lanka, and a blessing from Jerusalem in the shape of a palm saying “God bless our home”.
There are several standalone fridge magnets as well like a lighthouse, a schooner with sails unfurled, a penguin, lantern, sunflower, starfish, fruit basket, a Tae-kwon-do black belt executing a high kick, the Disney characters Mickey, Donald, Minnie, Goofy, Eeyore, Tigger and Winnie-the-Pooh, and a red double-decker BEST bus that is rarely seen on Mumbai roads. There’s one magnet that reminds me “Life is too short to drink bad wine!” The interior of my fridge is just as eclectic. It stocks South African wine, Lisbon port, Belgian chocolate, French cheese, Turkish dates, Italian salami, Spanish sausages, English plum pudding, New Zealand foie gras, Cuban cigars, Dutch beer, Chinese sauces, Thai curry pastes, Irish liqueur, Scottish marmalade, California prunes, Ceylon tea, Jamaican coffee, and Danish butter. So I open the fridge door several times in the day…
