Jackfruit Ice-cream? Yes, it’s a new flavor this summer. And it’s utterly yummy. I’ll admit, I was reluctant to try it at first. Too many of these fruity flavors are a disappointment. Especially the fusion ice creams. Like Fig and Honey. Peach and Apricot. Orange and Pistachio. Guava and Chilli. Which are neither here nor there. And leave me wishing I had stuck to tried and tested Chocolate or good old Vanilla. But the competition among ice cream parlors is fierce these sweltering, unforgiving days of summer. And anything gimmicky is par for the course. So Jackfruit Ice-cream is here. And it’s here to stay.
I had gone to buy Strawberry Ice-cream before it was out of season. And Mango. The man behind the counter insisted I taste their new Jackfruit flavor. That’s another thing they do. Generously dip a wooden spoon into the freezer with a glass top revealing tubs of all the flavors and give you a free taste of whatever you fancy. People adventurously pick the brightest, gaudiest colored flavors for a sampler. Or the craziest fusions.
Such as Paan and Pani Puri (I kid you not). And end up buying what they had come to buy in the first place. But I knew the salesman. Last summer he had given me a taste of their new Chickoo Ice-cream. It’s now among my favorite five. When I was a boy, there was Kwality Ice-cream, Joy, and Volga. Vanilla was the only flavor. Then Tutti-Frutti and Butterscotch were introduced. And we were grateful. Soon other ice cream brands came. Like Vadilal, Mother Dairy, Baskin Robbins, Amul, Hamvor, Dinshaw’s, and Pestonji (distinctly Parsi names but run by non-Parsis). Ice cream got more exciting with the entry of Gelato, Natural’s, Apsara, and Gokul. Now every mom-and-pop store has its own flavors. And housewives are making ice cream at home. In choices of Coffee and Chocolate. I am sold on Jackfruit Ice-cream. It is rich, creamy, and has flecks of Jackfruit pulp. Try it. You’ll thank me.
