Today, we are talking about a human, who is a “Man of substance”. Just one title will not justify the depth of his persona. In the corporate world majority of the population thinks that grape-vine, politics is the sure-shot way to excel. We at storyofsouls happen to meet a person who has attained his respect, designation all coz of his determination, hard work and positive thoughts.
The World Lost Hope In His Childhood
Meet Dr Amitava Ghosh, who was declared unfit by doctors at the age of 8 to carry out anything arduous, either in academics or any life skills. His parents were told that he will have to live as an “extra cared child” throughout his life because of an illness.
His academic life saw him receiving nothing more than 40% and that too with a whole lot of effort.
Born to an Army family, Amitava Ghosh did not give up on himself. With trepidation and tentative baby steps, he struggled in his own world. The strong medication made him sleep for more than 14 hours a day. Nobody had any expectations from him.
But he knew he had to fend for himself. Fighting apprehensions and a societal stigma or the tags that people would give him, he kept on walking ahead. In this journey, his mother has been a life force!
His First Job
As he cleared his college studies with a lot of struggles, he received the job of a messenger boy and dispatch rider, which he accepted and performed with full dedication. The company felt happy with his work from 9-6 pm. Looking at his dedication, the
company assigned bigger responsibilities to him; carrying out the HR function after his messenger boy time. It was from 6 to 10 pm! So, he was actually slogging from 5 am to 11 pm daily.
Ebb and Flow of Life
Dr Amitava went on with the flow of life and did everything on his own. He tried to sustain with the meagre amount that he earned. There had been times when he had walked for hours to reach a place or went hungry for 3 days as he had only 10 Rupees in his pocket! Once he walked 14 km to reach an interview venue! He had slept in a bus station for 03 days as he did not have a place to stay when he arrived in Delhi after staying in a motel for a week as he didn’t have money to pay the tariff.
For few years he continued working in companies and gaining the experiential learning that would serve him in the future and make him an authority in his field. At a certain point in time, when things were bleak and it seemed the prediction of many unkind souls would come true, lady luck struck! He had met a professional from India’s Largest Employee Outsourcing company sometime in the past and she had encouraged him to call her in case he needs a shift in the job industry. Amitava contacts her, only to be told that she will connect back in a week’s time.
The Phone Call – A Blessing in Disguise
Amitava never expected a call back from the kind lady. However, a call back from that kind lady gives a pleasant surprise to him on the 8th day! After some interviews with management higher-ups, the company offered him employment in the area of his expertise.
That phase started the success journey and he never looked back. The organization showed trust and appreciation and it added to Amitava’s confidence and created a hunger to grow and reach the zenith. He says, “If someone gives you freedom, it is
because he trusts you and has faith in your principles.” The future started shaping and he always feels deeply grateful to the lady to keep her promise and give him a chance. In his successful tenure in the company for 8 years. Amitava is awarded 4 promotions and reaches the level of Senior Vice President.
His zeal to learn continuously and take up challenges fearlessly, offer innovative solutions to complex problems and single-minded determination to grow the company and self are the reasons for his success. Publications, Authorship, Professional Learning Amitava has been working with dedication throughout his life. The top management is always appreciative of his knowledge and approach towards a problem and quick troubleshooting.
Begining of new Journey
Once, the Chairman of his company suggests to pen down his thoughts, ideologies. The world must know his vast knowledge in the field of Labour Laws and Employment. He took that suggestion to heart and started writing articles. His first book was a co-authored book on labour law that was acclaimed by the corporate and the academic world. Currently, Amitava has authored 68 Publications and 03 books and is in the process of penning 02 more books. He is an author of critically acclaimed and thought-provoking books on employee management.
His second book on GIG Economy made him the first Indian writer to delve into the realm of the emerging trend of the GIG workforce – the future of India. His 02 book got the best book award from Amazon. Amitava Ghosh is the Director HR and Group Employee Relations and Compliance Practice Head at India’s Largest Mobility Company. Earned an MBA from Bangalore University while being in employment and ranked 2nd in the University competing with very young and bright minds! He is also a PhD research scholar and a learner at heart. He is a Double Graduate and Double Postgraduate and honoured with a PhD (HC) in the field of HR.
Despite being a part of the corporate leadership, Amitava Ghosh is humble, generous and down to earth. He feels content with his life but not comfortable sitting on his laurels! A philanthropist at heart, the proceeds from his books are for the NGO. The name of this NGO is NO HUNGRY CHILD, Bangalore with clear standing orders. So that No Child Sleeps Hungry.
Definition of a Man
While having a long conversation with Amitava Ghosh we realise that he is a self-made man. According to him, enabling women talent and empowerment is a must-have practice area in all organizations and institutions. Why males cannot allow their wives to move out and work? The wives do not have freedom; the female is always questioned if they don’t follow the husband orders, but why? Why the colleagues and subordinates can’t support a lady at the workplace? If a lady must cook, the male must also cook and support the family. This comes under basic survival skills. As a family teaches a child about life skills, the males must be taught to run a household. It cannot be the sole responsibility of a woman. These are indeed very relevant in today’s scenario and it is heartening to see this coming from a renowned corporate man and published author!
Raising the Voice for Woman Empowerment and Talent
Why a man cannot accept a female boss? Why does the world doubt a woman’s competency after a sabbatical? Why there is so much reluctance to give a chance to the woman and help her to prove her talent and competency? According to him, a woman with patience and eagerness to do a job well will be able to put up with the ones who are already in employment. HR Heads write in newspapers about the comeback of women. But in reality, it doesn’t happen. Even women HR Heads don’t empathize with their fellow women and give them a chance. The instances of giving a chance to women are so few that it doesn’t even merit a mention.
He believes women possess a different DNA. It is disheartening to notice that corporates are not recognizing the untapped talent of women and give them an opening to flourish.
An Inspiration
His thoughts are not run of the mill. Amitava Ghosh has been able to put himself up as an inspiration because of his hard work, willpower and positive attitude. When the world lost hope in him, he stood tall. He kept walking and crawling all through his life. Today, he has seen all aspects of a successful career and yet remains grounded. He feels that if he would not have worked hard, he would not have been able to see the bright, and prosperous side of his present life.
Amitava Ghosh beautifully quotes” Be a Meteor Design to be Burn so that the Earth be Lighten. Be the Light of Hope. See Only the Objective – the Obstacles Must Give You Way!”
The average people keep on cribbing about trivial things. On the other hand, Amitava has no grievances. In fact, he picks the foul-tasting experiences of life with a smile. He composes his own narrative of life and is poise for an even bigger flight! Paddling effortlessly in both the corporate and academic world, he is indeed an exception, living and creating his story with his own actions, thoughts and willpower.
