Here’s a spectacular picture of Mumbai. Taken at night and uploaded on Facebook. By somebody on a flight winging its way through the dark monsoon skies. Going I don’t know where. Or flying in. Returning home, maybe. And hearing the captain announcing landing, looked out of the cabin window and saw the city sparkling seductively below, like a bejeweled and beautiful woman at night. The urge to take a cell phone picture would have been irresistible. A shooting star.
This is South Mumbai, you can see the bay curving from Raj Bhavan to Nariman Point, wearing the glittering Queen’s Necklace. The Arabian Sea is a deep indigo. Similar to a perfect reflection of the sky at night. I am not sure if this is on any commercial airline’s flight path for landing. Whenever I have returned to Mumbai, my flights have approached from the east, the picture below being the murky Vashi creek and the dingy slums of Kurla.
What the passenger behind this picture has probably missed but willy-nilly got on camera is the heavenly body darting across the sky. It is a shooting star. There one moment, gone the next. Easy to miss. There are stories about seeing a shooting star and making a wish. Bollywood says the wish will come true. Don’t bother. That’s wishful thinking. A shooting star isn’t a star. It’s a meteorite moving so fast in space that it burns up in the atmosphere. You are lucky if you see one.
